DEHRADUN: The state government on Saturday gave its nod to a proposal to set up adventure tourism centres in eight districts, chief secretary Subhash Kumar said.
The centres will come up in Nogaon and Mori in Uttarkashi district, Kotagi Sem in Rudraprayag district, Bhikiyasain and Kumaria at Almora district, Kapkot in Bageshwar district,Panchshwar in Champawat district, Satpuli and Srinagar in Pauri district, Joljeevi and Munsyari in Pithoragarh district and Kaleshwar and Joshimath in Chamoli district.
Kumar said Rs16 lakh have been sanctioned to develop the centres within the next six months. He said the centres will have facilities for river rafting, rock-climbing, kayaking, trekking, angling, mountain biking and camping. “This exercise will pave the way for finally opening a separate wing dedicated to adventure tourism to encourage these sports in the state,” Kumar said.
Saying that the centres will attract adventure enthusiasts from India and abroad, a senior Uttarakhand tourism department official said, “Despite tremendous potential for adventure sports, we have not yet been able to generate sizeable revenue from this field, which will be able to do now.”
